Slow down, you’re doing fine
You can’t be everything you want to be
Before your time.

Living a Slower Life

For most of my life, it felt like I was on a treadmill that never stopped. I answered yes too many times, loaded my schedule to the brim, and pushed myself so hard that I was barely keeping it together. I was the kind of person who wanted to please everyone and thought I could do everything. I kept going even when I was out of gas.

I assumed that what made me valuable was how much I could give, how much I could do, and how many plates I could keep spinning at once. But in actuality, it only made me feel fragmented and not like myself.

I didn’t understand how much life I was missing until I stepped back and let myself slow down. I don’t want to “do it all” anymore. I pick a slower pace that feels real and good for my body and mind.

And what surprised me? I’m okay with it.

How to Live a Slower Life

Living slowly doesn’t imply giving up on your goals or your duties. It only requires being purposeful: deciding what matters most and letting go of the rest.

To me, that looks like this:

  • Getting up early and going through the garden with my coffee.
  • Making meals at home with fresh, seasonal food.
  • Not feeling bad about saying no when something doesn’t fit.
  • Giving yourself time to rest and breathe without calling it “lazy.”
  • Being around people and initiatives that make me feel wonderful.
  • It’s not about being perfect. It’s all about being there.

How to Make Your Life Slower

If you feel the same pull on your heart, that quiet voice telling you to take a step back, breathe, and live more truly, here are some simple ways to start:

1. Make your schedule easier

Think about what’s really important and what you’re saying yes to because you have to or because it’s a habit. Take away one or two obligations that don’t help you. You will feel like you have more space.

2. Learn to say no without giving a reason.

This was one of the hardest changes for me. People used to give a lot of reasons why they couldn’t say no, but the truth is that “no” is a full sentence. Taking care of your energy is one of the best things you can do for yourself and the people you care about.

3. Get back in touch with your daily routines.

Take time for the tiny things that keep you grounded. While you cook dinner, light a candle. Go outside in the morning without shoes. Before bed, write in a journal. These times keep you grounded in the present and remind you that life isn’t only about the major events.

4. Clean up your space and your mind.

Your surroundings can frequently help you live a calmer life. Make the places you spend the most time in simpler to help you relax. You don’t have to completely change your life to be a minimalist. Just cleaning up your kitchen counter or a corner might make you feel better.

5. Spend more time outside

Being outside is the best way to calm down. Don’t take your phone with you when you walk. Get some sun. Pay attention to how the seasons change. Nature reminds us that it takes time to grow and that it’s alright to go at your own speed.

6. Unplug often

Our world is always “on.” Set aside times of the day when you won’t be using your phone or social media. When you quiet the hubbub, you can hear your own voice again.

7. Take your time cooking and eating

Instead of eating quickly, make cooking a part of your routine to slow down. Use fresh, uncomplicated foods. Put the table together. Savour every bite. One of the best ways to connect with ourselves and others is via food.

Finding peace by not doing everything

The biggest change for me was realising that I don’t have to prove myself anymore. How well I can juggle doesn’t define my worth. It’s linked to how much I am in my own life and how real I am.

Living a slower life has given me back something I didn’t even know I had lost: tranquilly. A profound, tranquil contentment that comes from letting go of the need to do everything and honouring my own pace.

If you sense that tug too, I suggest you stop for a moment. Take a step back. Take a deep breath. Pick one simple thing to do today to slow down, and that will be plenty. Because it’s enough. And you are too.
